Certified Associate Welding Inspector
CAWI
Insurance considerations for Certified Associate Welding Inspector credential holders.
Who This Is For
Certified Associate Welding Inspectors (CAWIs) are entry-level AWS inspection certification holders who perform welding inspection activities under the direct supervision of a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). CAWIs have demonstrated foundational knowledge of welding inspection principles and are building the experience needed to qualify for full CWI certification. They typically work in fabrication shops, construction environments, and manufacturing facilities as junior inspection professionals, assisting CWIs with visual inspection, documentation, and field quality activities.
Insurance Exposures
CAWIs working under CWI supervision have limited direct professional liability exposure for the inspection work itself — the supervising CWI bears primary professional responsibility for accepted inspection decisions. However, CAWIs who work independently on any portion of their inspection scope, who provide independent documentation, or who operate as contractors rather than employees face real professional exposure for that work. General liability is relevant whenever a CAWI is physically present at client locations. CAWIs employed by inspection firms or fabricators are covered under their employer's liability and workers compensation programs — the primary insurance need is for CAWIs operating independently or on a contract basis.
Coverage Considerations
Professional Liability (E&O)
Relevant to the extent the CAWI provides independent inspection services, issues documentation under their own name, or their employer performs inspection for clients. Under proper CWI supervision, the supervising CWI's professional liability policy typically covers CAWI-assisted activities — but CAWIs who operate in any unsupervised inspection capacity, or whose inspection documentation carries independent weight, should evaluate their own professional liability exposure carefully.
General Liability
Relevant for CAWIs who perform field inspections at client locations, fabrication facilities, and construction sites as part of their inspection activities. Any jobsite or facility visit creates potential general liability exposure for third-party bodily injury or property damage.
Workers Compensation
Relevant for employers of CAWIs — including inspection firms, fabrication shops, and construction companies. Independent CAWIs working as contractors should review state requirements for their business structure.
Commercial Auto
Relevant if the CAWI travels to multiple inspection sites using a business vehicle as part of their inspection role.
Tools & Equipment / Inland Marine
Relevant for CAWIs who own and transport their own inspection tools and measuring equipment to multiple inspection locations.
