Certified Welding Engineer
CWEng
Insurance considerations for Certified Welding Engineer credential holders.
Who This Is For
Certified Welding Engineers (CWEngs) are AWS-certified professional engineers specializing in welding engineering — including weld joint design, welding procedure development, qualification testing, failure analysis, metallurgical consulting, materials selection, and welding-related research and development. CWEngs may also provide expert testimony, quality system consulting, and engineering input on code compliance. They practice across aerospace, defense, heavy industry, petrochemical, shipbuilding, power generation, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Insurance Exposures
CWEngs carry the most significant professional liability exposure of any AWS credential holder, reflecting the engineering authority their credential represents and the high-consequence environments in which they practice. Engineering errors, flawed specifications, incorrect procedure development, and improper failure analysis conclusions can have major safety and financial consequences — generating substantial professional liability claims. CWEngs who also perform field work, visit client sites, and own engineering and testing equipment add general liability, commercial auto, and tools coverage needs to their professional risk. The professional liability policy limits appropriate for a CWEng should reflect the potential scale of damages in the industries they serve.
Coverage Considerations
Professional Liability (E&O)
Critical and the most important coverage for CWEngs — particularly those practicing independently or in consulting firms. CWEng-level engineering work creates substantial professional liability exposure across every service they provide: weld design, procedure development, failure analysis, expert consulting, code compliance guidance, and expert testimony. General Liability specifically excludes professional engineering services, making Professional Liability the only insurance that protects the core of a CWEng's practice. Policy limits should be selected based on the size and consequence of projects in the engineer's practice portfolio.
General Liability
Relevant for CWEngs who perform field work, visit client fabrication facilities or construction sites, or manage welding operations as part of their engineering practice. Any physical presence at a client location creates general liability exposure for third-party bodily injury or property damage.
Workers Compensation
Relevant for engineering firms employing CWEngs and support staff. Independent CWEngs with employees must carry Workers Compensation for those individuals.
Commercial Auto
Relevant for CWEngs who travel to client sites, project locations, or test facilities regularly as part of their engineering practice, particularly if they use a business vehicle.
Tools & Equipment / Inland Marine
Relevant for CWEngs who own and transport testing equipment, measurement instruments, and technical tools used in field evaluations, failure analyses, and engineering assessments at client locations.
