Certified Welding Educator

CWE

Insurance considerations for Certified Welding Educator credential holders.

Who This Is For

Certified Welding Educators (CWEs) are AWS-certified professionals qualified to teach welding theory, technique, safety, and practice in educational settings. CWEs work at community colleges, vocational and technical schools, trade schools, apprenticeship programs, and employer-based training centers, delivering welding instruction to students pursuing careers in the welding trades. CWEs may also develop curriculum, assess student performance, and serve as AWS SENSE program coordinators at their institutions.

Insurance Exposures

CWEs working at educational institutions face insurance exposures driven by the combination of their instructor role and the live welding environment in which they teach. General liability applies to student safety during lab sessions — burns, eye injuries, and equipment-related incidents in student welding labs are foreseeable and require institutional coverage. Workers compensation is important for CWEs employed by educational institutions. For CWEs operating independently — delivering contract training, consulting on program development, or running their own training business — professional liability becomes relevant for their curriculum and instruction decisions, and commercial auto applies to travel between training sites.

Coverage Considerations

Professional Liability (E&O)

Relevant for independent CWEs offering training services as a contractor, developing curriculum and training programs for third-party clients, or consulting on welding education program design. CWEs employed directly by institutions are typically covered under the institution's professional liability program, but those providing independent education services carry their own E&O exposure.

General Liability

Relevant for the educational institution's welding program operations — including student injury exposure in the welding lab during live training sessions — and for independent CWEs who deliver training at client facilities or off-site locations.

Workers Compensation

Relevant for educational institutions employing CWEs as instructors and staff, and for independent training businesses that have their own employees or assistants.

Commercial Auto

Relevant for CWEs who travel to deliver training at multiple locations, particularly those running independent training programs or serving multiple institutional clients.

Tools & Equipment / Inland Marine

Relevant for CWEs who own and transport welding machines, demonstration equipment, or training materials to off-site training locations.
