Certified Welding Fabricators
CWF
Insurance considerations for Certified Welding Fabricators credential holders.
Who This Is For
AWS Certified Welding Fabricators (CWFs) are fabrication companies — not individual welders — that have achieved AWS CWF accreditation by demonstrating that their welding quality system, personnel qualifications, welding procedures, and facilities meet AWS certification standards. The CWF accreditation is an organizational credential that signals to clients that the fabricator operates a formal, documented, and third-party-verified welding quality system. CWF-accredited shops serve demanding clients in construction, heavy industry, defense, and other sectors who require evidence of quality system maturity beyond simple welder credentials.
Insurance Exposures
CWF-accredited fabricators operate at a higher quality system maturity level and typically serve clients with more demanding quality, liability, and contractual requirements than non-accredited shops. Their insurance needs reflect both the nature of their work and the expectations of their accreditation clients. Completed operations liability is the primary long-tail exposure — CWF clients choose accredited fabricators for high-consequence work, and the consequences of a defect in that work can generate significant claims. Workers compensation is essential for production welding employees. Property coverage for the accredited facility and its specialized equipment is important. Umbrella coverage is often required by the major contractors and industrial clients who specifically seek CWF-accredited suppliers.
Coverage Considerations
Professional Liability (E&O)
Relevant for CWF-accredited fabricators who also provide engineering, inspection, or consulting services as part of their accredited offerings — for example, shops that develop WPS/PQR documentation for clients, provide CWI inspection services, or offer engineering design input alongside their fabrication work.
General Liability
Core coverage for all CWF-accredited fabrication operations. The completed operations portion of GL is especially important, as CWF clients place higher-consequence orders and expect certified-quality welds that perform in demanding service conditions.
Workers Compensation
Critical for CWF-accredited fabricators with production welding employees performing code-required work. The physical demands of production welding in a quality-controlled environment — heavy lifting, hot work, precision fitup — create significant workers compensation exposure.
Commercial Auto
Relevant for CWF fabricators with delivery vehicles, service trucks, and employees driving to client sites for installation, inspection, or project meetings.
Tools & Equipment / Inland Marine
Relevant for CWF operations with significant portable equipment used across multiple project locations or delivered to client facilities as part of their fabrication and installation services.
